  1. One of my favorite Whistler paintings is "Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother." It is an oil painting on canvas and was painted in 1871. It is on display at the Musee d'ORSAY in Paris France. It is one of three paintings on display there. It is great to see an American artist get recognition in France.

  3. Another one of Whistler's paintings is "Symphony in White, No.1: The White Girl". Like some of Whistler's other paintings this artwork was an oil painting created in 1862. It can be found in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. The purpose of this painting was just to show a unique work of art but due to the interpretation of the painting by critics, it was believed to have held some form of philosophical or deeper meaning than what the painting shows.

  4. The painting above is called"Nocturne in Grey and Gold" and it is an abstract that represents nature and tonalist painting. This painting comes from the era of tonalism.Tonalism is an American artistic movement that was started in the late 1800's. The movement is used to describe the dark landscapes that were said to have been influenced by the French Barbizon artists. The color in a tonalist painting have darker colors which can be associated with moonlight more than sunligh.

  5. James McNeill Whistler believed that paintings should exist for its own sake, and not to convey literacy or any moral ideas. James believed that emotions have nothing to do with what he painted and instead called his works arrangements or harmonies. This painting right here is the West Minster bridge in 1871.
